National Mediation Awards

Guest post: “Mediation has meant more to me than merely a process for a meeting”

Posted on Updated on

With the 3rd National Mediation Awards on the horizon, those of us on the PMA Board have had lots of chance to reflect on our enthusiasm for mediation and our wish to promote alternative dispute resolution as we get closer to the award ceremony on 25th September.

My own journey began nearly a decade ago. Working as a team facilitator I was increasingly asked to work with teams where people weren’t getting on. It’s unfashionable in many quarters to talk about what people get out of work. However quickly became clear to me how miserable warring co-workers were, the impact on their enjoyment of their lives and work and, of course, the impact on the success of their employers. My role with these teams was to get them to speak to each other – I didn’t realise until later that what I was doing could by titled mediation. I was however aware of the importance of this process.

Training as an accredited mediator in 2010 developed more skills and an insight into the narratives of conflict and, more importantly, conflict resolution. Mediation has meant more to me than merely a process for a meeting. It has helped me support managers, develop skills within organisations and help turn around situations that many have thought to be unsolvable. Becoming part of the PMA has helped me further this agenda.

I do hope that everyone who mediates or is interested in mediation or solving tough people problems at work will get involved in the National Mediation Awards on 25th September. The awards themselves will demonstrate the cutting edge of UK mediation and I’m also relishing the chance to meet others with the same interests. I hope to meet you there too.

Have you introduced some innovative practices that you can share across the mediation community? How do you monitor the scheme? What ongoing training and support is there for the internal mediators?  Promote your scheme and get the recognition you deserve, then we can all get to learn from the best integrated mediation schemes in the UK’s workplaces”

Last year’s proud winners were the Arcadia Group see what they said below about the award:

Arcadia were the 2013 winner in “Mediation Scheme of the Year Category” for the work we were doing to refresh and promote  our workplace mediation scheme. Not only were we delighted at the recognition for the hard work we had put in to make the scheme an attractive and viable alternative form of workplace dispute resolution for our employees, but also the award itself became a marketing tool to help us promote the scheme amongst our managers and staff.

Can your company boast of putting  similar measures in place to promote mediation in relation to workplace dispute resolution?
